There are many ways for volunteers to contribute to our program:
Become a literacy tutor:
Volunteer tutors go through an initial interview and participate in 3 evening training sessions that are offered at our office (266 Donlands Ave.) After training, they are matched with a student that they meet with once a week (on-site) for 2 hours. Students are generally working on developing skills in one or more areas of reading, writing, basic math and basic computers. Helping another adult overcome their barriers to full participation in the broader community is a rewarding volunteer experience.
Join our Fundraising Committee:
Are you looking for an opportunity to put some of your creative fundraising ideas into action? Do you have experience in fundraising, or is this a new area you’d like to explore? This fun committee generally meets on a monthly basis (excluding July & August) to plan and organize a number of events and activities that help financially support the program. In the past, we have hosted annual raffles, Pub Nights & Silent Auctions, a Theatre Night, a Skate for Literacy and more. We also do program outreach for potential new students and volunteers through some community events such as our annual booth at the Word on the Street Book & Magazine Festival.
Gain new or additional Board experience:
As a registered charitable organization, EYLE is governed by a Board of Directors. Board members are elected at our Annual General Meeting, usually held in mid-June. Recruitment to fill vacancies generally begins in April. The Board meets monthly, on Thursday evenings at our office.
